Early Life
Edwin Hubble’s full name is Edwin Powell Hubble. Edwin Hubble was born on 20 November 1889. He died on 28 September 1953. Edwin Hubble’s mother’s name was Virginia Lee Hubble.
While his father’s name was John Powell Hubble. He was an insurance executive. Edwin Hubble was born in Marshfield, Missouri, USA. Edwin Hubble was very fond of playing during his school days as a child.
He used to play basketball and football. Along with this, Edwin Hubble was also very good in studies. He always used to bring good marks. Hubble studied Mathematics, Astronomy and Philosophy at the University of Chicago.
Edwin Hubble loved his father very much. And he was also an obedient son. He used to obey all the words of his father. Edwin Hubble’s mind was very much in astronomy from the beginning.
But at the behest of his father, he studied law. First he went to the University of Chicago. After that he went to Oxford for his further studies. Edwin Hubble married Grace Lillian leib. Edwin Hubble was a Protestant Christian. But later some of his statements revealed uncertainty.
Discoveries
Edwin Hubble was an American astronomer. Who discovered other galaxies besides our galaxy. This was his great discovery about the universe. He said that the farther a galaxy is from Earth, the more light coming from it appears.
His theory was named Hubble Theory. The universe is continuously expanding at a very fast rate. Edwin Hubble was the originator of the expansion theory of the universe. NASA named the Hubble Space Telescope after him.
He also worked in France but came back to America in 1919. He soon found his biggest rival, Harlow Shapley. Harlow Shapley and many astronomers of that time believed that our galaxy is the whole universe.
Edwin Hubble died of a heart attack in 1953 in San Marino, California. In 1923 Hubble trained a telescope called the Andromeda Nebula. He did this training on a dim patch of sky.
They found that Andromeda is also full of stars like our galaxy. But there are only dim stars. But there Hubble saw a cephid variable star. Which can also be used to measure distance.
From its discovery it was found that the Andromeda nebula is not a nearby star cluster. Rather, it is a separate galaxy, which is called the Andromeda Galaxy. Similar discoveries were made with nebulae for many years after that.
By 1920 most astronomers believed. That this galaxy of ours is not alone. Rather apart from this there are millions of galaxies in the universe and this discovery proved to be a turning point in the world of science about the universe.
His discovery was great. But a very big moment in his life was yet to come. In 1929 Hubble found that most galaxies appear to be receding from us with velocities. Because of which their distance from us is increasing.
Edwin Hubble proved Albert Einstein’s theory correct. Albert Einstein predicted that our universe is expanding. Edwin Hubble designed and built the ‘200-inch Telescope on Palomar Mountain’. Hale was the largest telescope on Earth for decades.
Edwin Hubble aspired to receive the Nobel Prize. But while he was alive, his wish could not be fulfilled. But after his death the first space telescope was named after him. Wherever Edwin Hubble was, he must have been very happy to know that.
Big Bang Theory
Edwin Hubble then said that galaxies and other celestial bodies are rapidly moving away from each other. But he further explained its meaning and said that, in history, all the matter in the universe must have been closer to each other than it is today.
There must have been a time when all the celestial bodies must have stayed at the same place. Astronomers tried to analyze that time. How the matter of the universe is moving away from the state of being so close to each other.
Edwin Hubble played a very important role in the big-bang-theory. According to this theory and according to them, the universe was earlier as a tiny point. That point was very small and very dense. It must have been very hot.
In this situation, none of the laws of physics and mathematics etc. work. This condition lasts beyond time and time. At that point suddenly there was a very big explosion. Because of this the universe was born.
And the matter of this universe started moving away from each other. Even today they are moving away from each other. This universe is still expanding today.
This theory is called the big-bang-theory and this theory is considered to be the most valid about the origin of the universe so far.
Hubble Space Telescope
The Hubble Space Telescope was launched in 1990. It was found from the telescope that the universe is expanding very fast and the force behind this expansion was given the name of invisible energy.
This telescope has helped astronomers a lot in gathering many facts about the beginning and age of this universe. This telescope is part of NASA’s Great Observatories Program.
In 1995 the center of the Southern Ring Nebula displayed two stars, a bright white star and a faintly dim star. In which the dim star was forming the entire nebula.
NASA allows anyone to obtain the Hubble database. Which includes information related to new galaxies, new stars, solar systems, planets, space phenomena and gases discovered by telescope.
This Hubble Space Telescope, launched in 1990, is still working today. It has taken some of the most beautiful pictures of the universe in the last 31 years. and sent them to earth.
With the help of this telescope, scientists have been able to know better about the universe and the planets. Have been able to gather more information.
With the help of the Hubble Telescope, astronomers came to know that there is a group of energy-poor stars 7000 light years away. It’s based on this group of stars, the age of the universe was estimated between 13 and 14 billion years.
Technical Specification
NASA spent about two and a half billion dollars to send this telescope into space. Its servicing costs around $50000000. And in 2009, this telescope was serviced, which is expected to keep working from 2030 to 2040.
This Hubble telescope collects 10 to 15 gigabytes of data daily. It has a length of 13.2M and a maximum diameter of 4.2 m. It is orbiting 600 km above the surface of the earth. Its weight is 11 tons. It takes about 100 minutes to make one revolution around the earth.
